Local business uses Newman’s profits to charity model

Computer cables sold to raise money for causes

SAN DIEGO, March 9, 2011 — A few weeks ago, I wrote a story about San Diego County businesses that donate profits to charity in the model of Newman’s Own.

Here’s another one:

Jacob Tyler, a San Diego based brand-communications firm andCablesforCauses.org, a web-based HDMI and USB cable provider, are selling computer cables and donating all the profits to charity.

They’re asking web and social media users to purchase a cable and vote for a cause. All the profits collected as of June 18 will be donated to the charities based on the distribution of votes.

The project allows the company to “take advantage of money already being spent and put it toward something good,” said Adam Weiler, president of CablesforCauses.org.

“If we sell out of our initial order for this period we will raise about $50,000 for all the charities,” Weiler said.

You can buy a 6-foot cable for $9.99 and a 15-foot cable for $14.99.

Visitors to CablesforCauses.org – even those who don’t buy anything – can vote to allocate the money to charities including the American Lung Association, Narcotics Anonymous and The Michael J. Fox Foundation.
