HOW Magazine Spotlights Jacob Tyler’s Personality Testing Techniques and Company Growth in New Issue

San Diego, CA – April 11, 2012 – In the new May 2012 issue of HOW Magazine, the national award-winning design publication spotlights Jacob Tyler for their unique hiring practices, inventive leadership and in-depth personality testing in a feature article titled “DESIGN BY PERSONALITY.” The five page write-up delves into the fascinating and powerful results behind Jacob Tyler’s growth and use of the 16PF, a personality test brought to the company by the San Diego-based New Brain for Business Institute.

The 16PF measures where a person falls between 16 pairs of personality traits, such as reserved vs. warm, concrete reasoning vs. abstract reasoning and relaxed vs. tense. Jacob Tyler’s CEO Les Kollegian and President Charles Van Vechten understand the value in having a diverse office and how, because of the President and CEO’s “Odd Couple” dynamic, communication between the personalities became a key part of the company’s business model.

“We’ve always been interested in hiring people based on their personalities and then creating methods to accomplish synergy,” said Kollegian. “HOW Magazine hit the nail on the head in terms of what we do and how our company is built around not-like minded people. With Charlie being so grounded and me being so quick to react, we are a perfect example of how opposites can attract and create real success.”

HOW Magazine provides a practical mix of essential business information, up-to-date technology tips, the creative whys and hows behind noteworthy projects, and profiles of professionals who are influencing design. Jacob Tyler’s 30-person office is not only influencing design, but they are also redefining the way businesses hire, manage the workplace dynamics and thoughtfully facilitate their employees’ growth.

In the article, Kollegian discusses how the 16PF helped the company get to know each other and eventually create a stronger, more cohesive team. “When you’re a business owner, knowing yourself means knowing your team, too. The entire staff took the 16PF, and each person had the chance to talk over the results with Trafton. And at a company retreat, the group discussed the overall results (sans names). The process led to big strategic changes, small adjustments and even some fun discoveries.”

Richard Trafton, Co-Founder of New Brain for Business Institute, described the value of finding the right people for the right position, “Personality testing allows you to think about aligning people with the tasks in the organization that give them a better chance to be successful. Some people are really good talking to outside folks. Others would rather sit in their cube and work.”

Jacob Tyler has served numerous Fortune 500 clients and attributes a majority of their success to the personality testing methods. Their theory regarding “one and one making three” is concerned with synergy, in that the output of bringing together an office that compensates for each other’s deficiencies produces more as a unit than the individual pieces. They’ve been able to achieve this success through their inward focus and strong internal communication.

“At Jacob Tyler, one employee who had been in project management actually made the move to business development based on the testing,” said Kollegian. “Now that person is happier and more successful. It’s an individual result that mirrors what’s happening for the firm as a whole.”

The new May issue of HOW Magazine will be available at bookstores starting the week of April 16, 2012. For more information on the article or for media inquiries, contact Tomas Urtasun at 619-994-7417 ortomas.urtasun@focuscominc.com.
