They said 2008 was the social election.  Twitter had just launched and Facebook only had 100,000 users. I beg to differ. Social media and its infinite power have blossomed exponentially since then and will only continue to expand as time passes. Was 2008 the social election? Absolutely not. It was the first real social election – set to pave the way for all future campaigns.

I know what you’re thinking. Thank goodness Jacob Tyler wrote a debate re cap because I missed the debate last night. Well, as much as I’d like to say the following post will catch you up on the issues, the performance and give you all you need to know to cast your vote as an educated American, that’s just not the case. That said, here’s a social media snap shot of last night’s events, ranging from what was discussed and how brands responded, to how a certain Sesame Street character feels about it.

Presidential Debate 1: The Numerical Break Down

10.3 million – the number of tweets during last night’s debate.

50% – tweets talking about the candidates performance …rather than the issues discussed

58 million – the number of Americans who tuned in

26% – tweets describing Obama as “looking rusty”

22% – tweets describing Romney as “on his game”

1 – the number of insensitive tweets sent and quickly deleted by Kitchen Aid regarding Obama’s deceased grandmother *see below for tweet
